Fall Water News

Management Changes

Hermiston Irrigation District would like to take a moment to recognize and thank Chuck Wilcox for his 18+ years of service. Chuck retired from the District on September 30th. Chuck served on the Board of Directors for 7 years before he became the District Manager in October 1998.

Chuck has been instrumental in negotiating our Exchange Agreement, Water Rights Certification, and overseeing the Drop Structure Project. He will continue to serve on the Board of Directors of Oregon Water Resources Congress until his term expires next year, advocating for water rights and districts statewide.

Please join us in wishing him the very best as he embarks on the next phase of his life and finally gets to that honey-do list.

HID’s new District Manager is Jeremy Bolen. Jeremy has been with HID since October 2008 and has worked in the field as Leadman. Jeremy was raised in Hermiston and grew-up working in the family construction business. He has an extensive background in the construction and excavation fields. Please help us in welcoming Jeremy to his new position.

Fall and Winter Maintenance:

Since irrigation water was shut off on October 15th our ditch riders have become a part of the maintenance crew. The first projects have been mowing, burning and cleaning of the Feed Canal with the targeted completion date of November 1st.

For most of November the focus will be on canal maintenance throughout the district. This will include some burning, head gate repair, brush removal, and canal cleaning.

Beginning the end of November thru the month of December we will be working on two piping projects. Both of these projects will consist of replacing the old concrete pipe with new PVC pipe.

Please remove all obstacles within the ditch and pipeline easements; we can work much more efficiently if we do not have to work around or remove these obstacles. If you are having a problem with a screen or head gates please let us know so we can get these problems fixed.

Winter Conservation Project

The District has applied for and received a grant to replace the aging pipe and liner on the "LA"-Line. When the project is completed it will provide gravity pressure water to all patrons who receive water from the "LA"-Line. This is a conservation project designed to accommodate sprinkler irrigation at 8.5 gpm per acre only. Flood irrigation will not be available once the project is completed in your area. Each water user will be responsible for their own pump which will be necessary to achieve good coverage and efficient irrigation. Even though this system will have some gravity pressure it will not be adequate to efficiently operate sprinklers.

Construction is planned to begin the first part of January and continue through February with anticipated completion in early March.

District Easements

Most of the District’s easements are federal easements conveyed by the U.S. Government under the terms of several acts of Congress at the time of the District’s formation. The easements are private and exclusive for the operations and maintenance of the District’s distribution system. Joint use by the landowner is by agreement of the Board of Directors only. Easements may not be blocked and no encroachments, crossings or other uses will be allowed that will interfere with the District’s operation and use. This includes fences, gates, trees, or bridges. If you have a specific need, please contact the District office.
